Playa Venao is a several-kilometer-long sandy beach on the Azueros Peninsula in Panama. It belongs to the province of Los
Santos, and is less than 20 minutes away from the charming town of Pedasi. Playa Venao is thanks to its perfect wave conditions ranked as the number one surf spot in Panama. Among the surfers, this picturesque Pacific beach is internationally known and its waves are estimated as one of the best of all of Latin America. Every year the waves, that are sometimes up to five meters (16 foot) high, attract surfers from all around the world. For a couple of years now Playa Venao has been hosting several international surfing competitions. Reef, Roxy, Billabong and Co. have discovered this beach since long. On special holidays, the usually dozy surfer town, becomes one big colorful party. They build up stages and give concerts and everyone celebrates wildly to reggae, electronic and local music. On weekends they often create a huge bonfire on the beach and play guitar while the rest simply listens and enjoys soothing sounds of the sea. Due to the high popularity even among the locals we recommend to find a suitable accommodation before you arrive. Playa Venao doesnt offer too many places to stay yet. If the few hotels and hostels are booked the only option would be to camp, which of course is not everyones first choice. Many travelers, in case of room shortage, go to Pedasi or Canas in order to find a bed.
Travel Panama hint:
For all the surfers among us there is of course the possibility to rent surfboards. Every hotel and hostel in Playa Venao offers such a service. Definitely worth a trip is Isla Canas, where you can watch sea turtles while they breed. In addition, the small island of Isla Iguana, with its white sandy beaches, is located just a few minutes away by boat.
