Barro Colorado

Barro Colorado is an island in the middle of the Panama Canal, in the Lake of Gatun. Barro Colorado is one of the few islands which

have remained entirely unaffected by the Panamanians and Americans. Since 1923 this island has been declared a nature protection area. As consequence of the isolation an amazing variety of species has settled there which arouse the interest of animal- and plant scientists. The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute established a research centre on the island where scientists from all over the world can do research and explore the Panama Canal.

Visitors of Barro Colorado

As Barro Colorado is completely covered by the humid-tropical rain forest, you can cross the island only on built paths. New species of animals and plants are continually discovered on Barro Colorado. Only a small part of the island is accessible for visitors in order not to jeopardize the ecological balance. Almost every day boat trips including a guided tour on Barro Colorado are offered by the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute at a price of 70$. Advance reservation is required.

I would like to go there, but how?

Barro Colorado can be reached by bus or taxi from Panama City within a few minutes. It is the easiest way to go via Gamboa from where you can either take a small ferry or a speedboat. Due to the quite immense interest in this tour, you should book it as early as possible.

Since 2007 the online travel guide #1 for Panama and Panama City.
